National Science and Engineering Grand Challenge

The culmination of a series of Science and Engineering Challenges involving more than 12,000 students from 400 high schools in all states of Australia during 2007.

Over 500 Grade 9 and Grade 10 students from 15 schools across Australia competed in the challenge for the title of National Grand Champion.

This event was conducted over 17 and 18 October 2007 and was held on the  USQ Toowoomba Campus.

Activities during the Challenge

In addition to competition activities, USQ hosted BBQ's on the Tuesday and the Wednesday nights for the school students and their teachers to celebrate the challenge.  There was a band, Science on the Go presentations and Phil the Phoenix giveaways over the two nights.

Dr Graham Phillips (host of ABC TV's Catalyst) was the guest speaker at the Grand Challenge dinner on the Wednesday night and presented trophies and medallions to the winning schools on Thursday 18 October. For over ten years Graham has been a reporter with ABC TV’s science unit and he has also been a presenter with Channel Seven’s Beyond Tomorrow and a reporter with ABC TV’s Quantum.
