Mr Bernard Lillis Cheif Operating Officer

Role

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership and management of the functions, centres and departments that comprise the University Services portfolio incorporating Human Resources, Financial Services, Campus Services and Sustainable Business Management & Improvement.

The Chief Operating Officer provides strategic advice and specialist support on the strategic positioning of the University’s financial, physical and human resources in addition to a range of corporate support activities such as planning and information management, records management, environmental management and compliance matters.

Biography

Before joining USQ as its Chief Operating Officer in 2009, Bernard was the Executive Director Finance & Administration and Chief Financial Officer at the University of Tasmania responsible for a broad portfolio which embraced Student Services and ICT as well as Finance, HR, Governance & Legal and Facilities and he has held similar general management roles at James Cook University and UMIST in Manchester since joining the university sector from commerce in 1990.

Bernard is a business graduate and has been a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants since 1980. His commercial career involved senior financial roles with Dunlop and General Electric amongst others.

Memberships and affiliations

Bernard is a current member of the DVC Corporate group of Universities Australia, a former Executive member and past chair of its Infrastructure Group. He is a current member of the Queensland Senior Administrators’ group.

Bernard has had a long association with the providers of university superannuation services, both here and in the UK, having been a member of UniSuper’s Joint Consulting Committee whilst at JCU and UTAS and as chair of the British Universities Finance Director’s Superannuation Group for UniSuper’s sister company, USS Ltd, in the UK and a management representative on USS’s Joint Negotiation Committee.
