In Parliament House Canberra, on August 31, 2001 the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, announced that the University of Southern Queensland was joint winner of the Good Universities Guides 'University of the Year' for 2000-2001.

This University has positioned itself at the forefront of modern delivery methodologies and this has only been achieved through the goodwill, commitment and skills that University staff and students bring to their work. It is especially pleasing that the University receives this Award for its excellence in e-World things yet, at the same time, can reaffirm its commitment to the offering of "Choice" to our students: On campus, Off campus, Online. I emphasise the importance of our very real and continuing commitment to providing study options. Learners must be given the chance to decide upon their mode of study from options that are of equal quality and outcome.

This Award is a real boost for regional Australia. Our students are spread throughout regional and urban Australia and many overseas countries. They are our best advertisement. Their chance, now, to identify with an acknowledged leader in e-World education demonstrates that "excellence" is not based on their postcodes, or the location of their University!
