When applying
When should I apply?
As soon as you become aware that you may be studying at USQ. Some students apply more than twelve months in advance. It is recommended that you apply before the end of November in the year prior to entry. However, applications are accepted right up to when teaching commences for the semester.
Why is there a need to apply early?
Colleges receive more applications than there are places available. Colleges offer accommodation places in the order in which applications are received. Offers of accommodation are first made in December and continue into January and February until all rooms are full.
Is there an application fee?
Yes, there is a nominal application fee which is non-refundable.
How much does accommodation cost per week and what is included?
The fees are based on residing for a full semester of 15 weeks (excluding recess periods), are all inclusive and depend on the type of room requested.
How long is the minimum stay?
Residents are required to reside for the full semester in which they are admitted as outlined in the Rules of Residency.
Do I have to pay during vacation periods?
Vacation periods are not included in the 15 weeks, as many students do not require accommodation over vacations. If a student requires accommodation, the normal accommodation rate is payable. Subject to availability, residents may store their belongings in their room over the recess period for a reduced fee. Forms will be distributed for this option prior to the recess period. Residents must hand in their key before departure to receive this benefit.
When are the fees payable?
The letter offering an accommodation place outlines the amount payable and the payment options. Offers need to be accepted and payments made within seven days or the offer lapses and the place is offered to the next student on the waiting list.
When arriving
Do I have my own bathroom?
Whilst some rooms in McGregor College have their own bathrooms, bathrooms are generally shared between students. Accommodation fees depend on the type of room requested. Students can indicate their preference on their application form.
Will I have access to the internet?
College residents who have their own computers have broadband access to the USQ Student computer network, including the Internet.
What do I have to bring?
While basic furniture is supplied, students should bring along personal belongings. Some students also bring their own computer, doona, TV, VCR and a small fridge. However, TVs, VCRs and fridges are provided in each common room, while computer access is available 24 hours a day for all students of the University.
Life at Residential Colleges
What is the Resident Student Club?
The Resident Student Club (RSC) is a resident body democratically elected at each college to represent the students. The RSC manages the RSC finances and organises college activities, functions and merchandising.
Who are the Collegiate Team?
The Collegiate Team is put in place by the University to manage the day to day functioning of the Colleges and to ensure the wellbeing of all residents. The Collegiate team is in place to provide social, pastoral and academic support to all residents and to assist in the personal development of the College community.
Are there any social events at the Colleges?
Social and personal development is an important part of collegiate living.The College Calendar highlights a number of academic, social and sporting events held throughout the year. Each of the three colleges have their own traditional social events and these are organised by the college Residential Student Club.
