25 Year Celebrations

Concannon College celebrates 25 years in 2010

Concannon College residents will be celebrating a milestone in 2010, with planning underway to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of its establishment in 1985. The College is named after Monsignor Edward Concannon, to honour his work and devotion to youth and education throughout the Toowoomba Diocese for over 50 years; and also to recognise the Concannon family, which gave four sons to the ministry, possibly an Australian record. The foundation stone of Concannon College was blessed and laid by Monsignor Edward Concannon PP VG on 11 May 1985. The College began with only A and B Blocks accommodating 50 residents. Stage 1 was officially blessed and opened by Cardinal Sir James Freeman DD on 28 July 1985, in the International Youth Year.

Stage 2, consisting of C and D Blocks, was officially blessed and opened by Cardinal Sir James Freeman on 1 May 1988, the Bicentennial Year, increasing the College capacity to 102 residents.

On 22 September 1991, the third stage was blessed by Cardinal Edward Bede Clancy AO and officially opened by Mr Les Scott MP, the Federal Member for Oxley. Stage 3 comprised of the Bishop Edward Kelly Dining Hall and complimented the College’s four existing residential blocks. The original College Dining Hall was a demountable building which is now used as a recreational hall for the residents.
