Using Portable Moodle and eReaders to Enhance Learning at a Distance for Incarcerated Offenders

PLEIADES is a collaborative project between the Australian Digital Futures Institute and the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre.

While courses are increasing being delivered online, the lack of internet access for those studying in correctional facilities makes this problematic.

In order to redress these issues, this project uses a standalone version of the Moodle learning management system that has no internet connectivity. A course is loaded directly onto a local server within the correctional centre. Students will access the local installation rather than the university server.

Course content is further supplemented by eReaders that can be utilised by the student during periods of confinement.

This project is in its early stages, but we anticipate the outcomes to have positive impact in terms of contributing to the rehabilitation of incarcerated students across Australia.
