University recognised for commitment to multiculturalism
USQ once again cemented its reputation as a leading multicultural university when it was recently awarded the prestigious 2008 Queensland Multicultural Award in Business.
The award was presented by the Hon. Lindy Nelson-Carr, MP, Minister for Communities and Multicultural Affairs and Mr Michael Choi, MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Multicultural Affairs during a special award ceremony at Parliament House in Brisbane.
USQ was the first Australian university to adopt a formal Policy on Multiculturalism in 1998. In 2006 the University established its Multicultural Centre which was officially opened by the Queensland Minister for Multicultural Affairs.
Director of USQ's Multicultural Centre, Dr Krzysztof Batorowicz said the award further emphasizes USQ leadership in this area.
'The Queensland Multicultural Award 2008 in Business Category - Large Business is a significant recognition for both the University and its Multicultural Centre for the promotion of multiculturalism in Queensland,' Dr Batorowicz said.
'The award confirms and reinforces USQ leadership in the area of multiculturalism beyond the higher education system, which plays an important role also in the business sector and in the community.
'The USQ Multicultural Centre welcomes the award as a further contribution to our exceptional record. The Centre intends to build on its recognition by the governments, universities and community organisations as well to develop its expertise at an international level.
'We wish not only to maintain but also develop our international contacts and further contribute to the unique programs for the benefit of our students, staff and the community.'
