2013 Winners

There was a definite glow in the air and skip in the steps of the 80 people acknowledging the success of this year’s USQ Alumnus of the Year Award winners this morning, April 16, 2013.  The fairy-tale scene was set by the beautiful surroundings of Gabbinbar Homestead in Toowoomba with the aroma of coffee, breakfast treats and sweet smell of success that oozed from the grand room where USQ alumni were awarded their trophies.

Master of Ceremonies, Associate Professor Janet McDonald kept guests entertained throughout the awards ceremony with her witty and engaging comments about alumnus winners and distinguished guests.

USQ Chancellor, Bobbie Brazil warmly welcomed guests to the breakfast followed by a very humbled 2012 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year winner Mark Willacy on video.  Mark spoke highly of the Alumnus of the Year Awards and the honour he felt when he was announced as the Outstanding Winner for 2012.  He also offered some inspirational advice which was to give anything a go and while you may not always succeed at first, you will get there in the end.  Mark's video introduced the formal presentations of all Faculty winners.

Faculty of Arts winner, Russell Dykstra was not able to personally attend the award ceremony but did submit an engaging and entertaining video thanking USQ for his award.  Russell addressed the audience in character as Uncle Fester from the Addams Family, his current theatre role.  The other Faculty winners in attendance spoke admirably of USQ and the Alumnus of the Year Awards and were grateful for the recognition.

Following the presentations to the Faculty winners, the key note address by 2012 Young Alumnus of the Year, Katrina Hobbs was heart-felt and inspirational hailing her USQ experience and the honour she felt receiving the award last year.   By this stage, the palms of many guests were almost raw from the congratulatory applause but there was still room for cheering on the Young and International Alumnus of the Year.

The big moment though was when the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year was announced.  All Faculty winners sat at the edge of their seats awaiting the big announcement including Faculty of Arts Award winner on Skype. A pin could drop and be heard as the envelope was opened by USQ Vice Chancellor, Jan Thomas who announced, Russell Dykstra as the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for 2013. Russell spoke to guests via Skype and thanked all those who contributed to his success and was both shocked and honoured by the announcement of the prestigious award.

Key to success: Never give up, study the particular aspect of the craft you love and go where the work/scene is happening. I was found because I was getting out there and being active in my pursuit for work and excellence. I delivered shows that were dynamic and exciting.
