Mark Willacy, winner of the 2012 USQ Alumnus of the Year and Faculty of Arts Alumnus of the Year, began his studies with USQ in Engineering but realised pretty quickly that the black and white world was not for him. He transferred from Engineering to Arts at USQ in the early 1990s, graduating in 1995 and never looked back.
Mark is now one of Australia’s leading foreign correspondents, having spent nearly 10 years reporting from more than 30 countries, including many trouble spots around the globe. Since 2008, our Outstanding Alumnus of the Year and Faculty of Arts winner has been working as the Bureau Chief/North Asia correspondent for ABC TV and Radio, based in Tokyo.
He has twice won, the Walkley Award, Australia’s premiere journalism prize. In 2011, as a nominee in more categories than any other journalist, he took out the Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism, Radio News and Current Affairs, with his report on the devastation of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami.
In the future, Mark is looking forward to coming home to Queensland. He wants to watch his children run around in the back yard, ride bikes and experience the cultural freedoms of being an Aussie while he continues to report for the ABC about stories on the cutting edge of history.
