A revolutionary musical theatre based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera.
First staged in 1928 at the Theatre am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin, The Threepenny Opera is a satire on the bourgeois society of the Weimar Republic, but set in a mock Soho.
With Brecht's cutting edge story and Kurt Weill's music - one of the earliest and most successful attempts to introduce the jazz idiom into the theatre - the play fast became a popular hit through the western world.
The cabaret style production included well-known songs such as The Ballad of Mac the Knife, Pirate Jenny, Barbara Song, Tango Ballad and Solomon Song.
With musical direction by Russell Bauer, Stage Direction by Kris Weir and featuring actors, singers, musicians, creatives and puppeteers from the University's Creative Arts program, this promises to be a vivid, wild, entertaining, dramatic, dark, funny and provocative night at the theatre.
A series of Brechtian and Cabaret Workshops will offered to school groups in conjuction with this production.
