Danish Artists Showcased in Exhibition
Twelve contemporary Danish artists will be featured in the University of Southern Queensland’s upcoming exhibition, Our Summer is Your Winter.
Curator of the exhibition and USQ Visual Arts Co-ordinator, Dr Kyle Jenkins said, “the aim of the exhibition is to demonstrate the dynamic and varied visual and conceptual outcomes which are being created by Danish artists right now.”
“The original idea came from myself and Danish artist Uffe Holm (who is participating in the exhibition) where we wanted to create an exhibition where twelve very dynamic and varied Danish artists exhibit together, creating an active dialogue from one artwork to the next.
“In 2006, USQ hosted Danish artist, Michael Boelt Fischer as an Artist-in-Rresident in the Visual Arts program, and since that time Michael and I have remained friends and also exhibited together.
“Both Michael, Uffe and I are represented by the same commercial gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark (Galleri Kant), thus the links between USQ and Denmark are extensive both professionally as well as through friendship.”
The exhibition will consist of a wide variety of artwork produced across an array of materials including collage, sculpture, painting, ceramics and printmaking.
“To keep the mix interesting, we have come up with a unique selection process of artists; not unlike 'Chinese whispers’.
“I invited Uffe and Michael to participate, then they were asked to each invite one artist and those two artists were asked to invite an artist each and so forth until there were twelve.
“The result, a dynamic display of artists whose only link is that they are Danish and, a surprise for me as curator.”
This is the first exhibition in a series of exchange exhibitions between Denmark and Australia.
Our Summre is Your Winter will run from 17 July until 2 August in the USQ Art Gallery, West Street, Toowoomba.
The gallery is open on weekdays from 9.00am to 5.00pm.
