Synopsis
When the old Crone enters the stage, her favourite story she is about to tell as she narrates throughout the play. At first we are welcomed to a farm where Sophia and her father live alone with the farm animals. One ordinary morning it is brought to Sophia's attention- by the cow, that she is a remarkably attractive girl- for a human being. Soon enough, every animal in the kingdom knew of her beauty and without a doubt it went to her head.
Soon, a war begins and the farmer's cows are taken away to give dairy products to the soldiers in the war. He is left destitute. Without his cows, father would not eat, and became very sick. Sophia soon is told by ants about the ‘The singing pool'. So as she is told, she takes her grandmothers silver cup from underneath her fathers bed to the centre of the forest where on her way she meets a bear, an owl, a snake and a butterfly that all help her to reach ‘The singing pool'. On reaching her destination she accidentally drops the cup into ‘The singing pool'. She weeps until a frog approaches and retrieves the cup with water in it for her father. However, there is a deal the frog makes that Sophia must agree to - that once she returns to the farmhouse that the frog may visit her three times to sit on her windowsill, and she agrees.
The war comes to an end, father becomes well and as the deal was settled, the frog visits 3 times to sit on Sophia's windowsill. However Sophia seems to be pre occupied with her beauty among other things and does not allow the frog to sit on her windowsill any of the three times he visits.
And like magic, Camilla appears, the troll princess and throws a handful of mud onto the frog… "POW"!! He is now a prince named Simon. Camilla has had a spell on Simon (the frog prince) since he was born which turned him into a frog. If he couldn't get the most beautiful girl in the world to let him sit on her windowsill for three days by the age of 18, he was to marry Camilla. With that, Simon and Camilla were gone.
Sophia, upset as she was wanted to find a way to save her friend Simon and just like waking up the moon appeared and told her to travel, East of the sun, West of the moon, to find Simon. So Sophia started her journey and again met animals in the kingdom that helped her on her way. They taught her a few things about herself she didn't know she was able to do. As her journey continued she learnt more about her abilities as a human girl like how to use her lungs to scream to find the owl, and by the time she reached East of the Sun West of the Moon to save Simon she had grown from the farm yard beauty into a young lady.
When Sophia at last reaches East of the Sun West of the Moon, it seems as though it is too late, but as Sophia has travelled such a long way, she isn't about to give up. With a stage of darkness, only Sophia is left and Camilla…history. Now, Sophia and Simon wed and become Princess Sophia and Prince Simon, who, as you expected, live happily ever after.
