MARTIN is a boy of ten who is very rambunctious, brash and ‘naughty’. He is very imaginative and courageous and has an army of imaginary friends.
MS DUFFY is Martin’s class teacher. She is very caring but takes her teaching responsibilities very seriously. As a result, Ms Duffy might seem (at times) a little tough but is generally thought to be fair in her judgements. She genuinely cares for her students and holds a bit of a soft spot for Martin.
CAMPBELL is the Headmaster of Martin’s school.
ROSE is the new girl in Martin’s class. She is ten years-old and is smart and mature for her age. Rose also has an imaginary friend named Marichi.
LILLY is Martin's mother. She is concerned about Martin and unhappy. Lilly and her husband Calvin seem to be having marital issues.
CALVIN is Martin's father and like Lilly is concerned and unhappy.
Imaginary Friends
SPOCK is the best friend of Martin. Spock often is used to mirror Martin as they are very similar, however he presents an older and wiser view then Martin.
OEDIPUS is the mythical Greek King of Thebes who fulfils the oracles prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. In they play, Oedipus takes on many of the traditional character traits such as being hot headed and quick to act, he is arrogant and loves the ladies. Oedipus is often the first to lead Martin astray.
SHANGO is a religious figure in the Caribbean and is a sky god of thunder and lightning. Shango is the best mate of Oedipus and his greatest fan. Shango is selfish and often rude and brash.
SIR FRANK is a well-known historical figure from the Elizabethan era. He was an English sea captain, second in charge of the fleet against the Spanish Armada. He was considered a pirate by the Spanish. In the play, Sir Frank is a little eccentric and an enthusiastic character who Martin looks to for advice.
MADONNA is the old Italian word for 'my lady'. Mary the virgin mother of Jesus is also known as the Madonna. In the play, Madonna is the beautiful, maternal figure who acts as a peacemaker.
KAPO is originally a mythical, Hawaiian goddess of fertility, sorcery and dark powers who can assume any shape she wills. In the play, Kapo is a very masculine female who is in love with Logan but often gets frustrated with him.
LOGAN is considered the first patron saint of homosexuality. In the play, Logan acts more like a 'woman' and tries to get the very masculine Kapo to act more like a ‘female’.
HERMES is a Greek mythological god who acted as a messenger and guided dead souls to the Underworld. He is said to be a prankster and an inventive genius. In the play, Hermes is the leader of the mischievous trio in which he is always trying to have the upper hand.
HOLLER is often linked to Sun Wukong or better known as the monkey king in the television show Monkey Magic. In the play, Holler is a slow-witted and mischievous big kid who is a part of the trio.
HAN refers to a Chinese Dynasty, one of the most powerful, with a very decadent but honourable culture. In the play, Han plays a mischievous acrobatic who is very fast and smart and is the third member of the mischievous trio.
TENGU is originally a supernatural creature of Japanese folklore with both human and avian characteristics. They are dangerous, protective spirits of the mountains and forests. In the play, Tengu is a lonely but powerful ninja who has a great mastery of the blade.
DAPHNE is another character whose origins lie in Greek mythology. She was a nymph, a female spirit, who was hit with the arrow of lead shot by Eros, the son of Aphrodite, who had been stirred by Apollo. The lead arrow made Daphne not to want to love anyone. Apollo was hit by a second arrow that was gold tipped giving him an insatiable lust. Daphne asked her father Peneus, the river god, for help as Apollo was chasing her and so Peneus transforms her into a Laurel Tree, making her mute. In the play, Daphne is mute and comes across as very child-like, innocent and pure.
MERCURY is another character from Greek mythology. Mercury is a lot like Hermes as he is a messenger god and a god of trade. In the play, Mercury is the partner of Daphne. Mercury possesses mercenary traits - a fast-talker and a smart alec.
ECHO is a reflection of Martin and therefore a reflection of the imaginary friends as well.
MARICHI is Rose's imaginary friend. In Buddhism, Marichi is one of the pantheon goddesses. Her name means ray of light. She has an eye in the middle of her forehead, three frightening faces and ten arms. In the play, Marichi is an alien who has a ray gun. She is very quick, intense and also cautious.
THREE WARRIOR BIRDS are the enemies that Martin and his imaginary friends hurt and later apologise to.
