Employability skills workshops

Employability skills can be defined as the skills necessary for an individual to secure employment, progress in their career, maximise their potential and make a significant contribution to the fulfilment of an organisation's mission. They are often referred to in a variety of different ways including transferable skills, core skills, key skills, key competencies, generic skills or soft skills. There has been extensive research conducted on this issue, and results from these investigations have highlighted the importance of these skills for career development.

The aim of this part of the project is to embed employability skills into the overall University curriculum. This will be achieved in a variety of ways:

  1. Through workshops presented by major employer representatives where they will discuss with USQ students the qualities that are essential for career success.
  2. The development of an undergraduate course on employability skills to be offered as an elective unit.
  3. Encouraging all faculties to ensure that employability skills are mentioned in courses, are subject to assessment and discussed on a regular basis.

Developing employability skills

There are a variety of ways in which employability skills may be developed. Among these are participating in the Career Mentoring program, utilising informational interviews, being committed to lifelong learning, and  work experience.

Applying for jobs

Resources on developing successful job applications through effective resumes and statements addressing selection criteria, as well as a guide to understanding and preparing for job interviews are available.

The CareerHub is an Internet employment service for USQ students which provides students with 24-hour access to casual, part-time, full-time and graduate employment opportunities.
