Senior Sergeant Steve Jenkins - Master of Police Management

I found the content of the Master of Police Management extremely interesting and quite relevant to my current and future policing duties. The requirements of the program provided the opportunity to explore various aspects and facets of policing, management and leadership. The course provided the theory and skills necessary for operationalising and implementing the various aspects of policing covered in the core study units. They related to operational policing as well as higher level senior management issues (e.g. staffing allocations and operational performance reviews). I have no doubt that the learning achieved through studying this program will complement my policing experience and be of benefit in my future career.

I found studying at USQ an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. The facilitators for the Police Management program, in particular Dr Glenda Adkins, are extremely knowledgeable and well versed in respect to policing related issues, particularly in the Queensland context. They are also quite cognisant and understanding of the issues associated with working full-time whilst studying. This degree of understanding and flexibility assisted greatly in reducing the stress levels associated with completing assignments. These facilitators also provided excellent advice, guidance and feedback on assignments and other issues.

As a graduate of the Master of Police Management program at USQ, I have no hesitation in recommending the Police Management program to prospective students.

Lorna Cross - Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management major)

I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I just knew I liked working with people. My fascination for people led me to the hospitality industry and I have also worked as a photographer, in retail and tourism.

My drive to learn and create has served me well. Not a natural academic (I left school at 13 to travel and find myself), I have had to put in a lot of extra hours to get as much as I can from my time at USQ. Along the way, the results have come despite all the challenges, or perhaps because of the challenges! I discovered Human Resource Management and uncovered what it was I wanted to do with my life. I want to be in a position where I can bring the feeling of satisfaction, well-being and fulfilment to others on a long-term scale, by helping people where they spend the majority of their waking life – in the workplace!

It is such an exciting time to be entering the field of HRM, in light of the changing political and social environment affecting the world we work in. With the implementation of policies relevant to individuals, I believe as a passionate HR manager I can help the business community meet organisational objectives by enabling people to meet personal goals and self-actualisation in the work place. I will help businesses get higher productivity and innovation from their employees, and help employees be all they can be. I love studying HRM.

Jennifer Timbrell - Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management major, Marketing and Psychology minors)

I started my studies with USQ because I found HRM interesting, but I was always worried that I wouldn't be able to get a job in my chosen field – or at least not locally.

At the end of last year I decided that I was sick of having no money and the grind of full-time study, so I made the decision to get back into full-time work and finishing my degree externally. I started responding to local job advertisements and soon enough found myself meeting with my future employer, McDougall Smith Human Resources and Recruitment (a local human resource consultancy and recruitment firm founded by two USQ graduates). Now, my job may not be glamorous (I am a recruitment support officer, which is a cross between an administration officer and a recruiter), but after joining the company only four months ago I have already been faced with heaps of career development opportunities. For example, I have attended a recruitment advertising workshop in Brisbane and had extensive exposure to skills testing, selection interviews and psychological testing. This is pretty exciting stuff for someone who is only half way through their degree!
