What have we learned?

Focus: What have we learned? Where do we go from here?

We have covered a lot of ground in this course. We have considered the views of techno-optimists and techno-pessimists; reviewed some of the recent research and policy developments relevant to ICT in education; looked at what is actually happening with ICT and the responses of teachers; considered how ICT might be treated in the curriculum; and looked at some current trends and issues.

I preparing the course I tried to select recent reading material from a variety of sources. That should have provide opportunity to look at the topic from different points of view. It should also have helped you to identify sources from which you may be able to draw material in the future as you try to keep pace with changes in ICT and its application to education.

Perhaps the one thing we can be certain about in regard to ICT and education is that it will be different in the future, probably the near future. In such an environment we need to be prepared to continue learning. In his last editorial for Learning & Leading with Technology, Dave Moursund (2001) suggested some approaches to "lifelong learning and capacity building" for teachers. It makes for an interesting final reading for the course.
