Here are some guidelines and resources for making presentations.

Guidelines for presentations

  • Prepare a session plan – this is a document that assists you to plan and keep on track during the session – it covers: content (what you will say), who will cover each section, timing (for how long), and when visual aids will be used.

  • Prepare speaker’s notes for the presentation - these are used by the presenter when addressing the key points that are on the PowerPoint slides and/or overhead transparencies.  You would only include key points on the slides and you will need these notes to remind you of what you want to say about each point.

  • Prepare student handouts (optional) - useful for complex material or material that does not show well on an overhead.

  • Prepare power point slides or overhead transparencies

    • For a twenty-minute presentation, you would expect to have about 20 slides.

    • Remember you would only include key points on the slide.

    • Do not put too much on each slide - use key words/phrases not sentences

    • Don't use too many graphics and make sure they are relevant

    • Provide a title slide that introduces the topic and the team.

    • Provide a slide for the session overview and at the end a conclusion

    • Use a font of at least 24 points - Arial is the most readable

    • You can hyperlink word documents but remember to save the word doc to the same disc at the PowerPoint presentation

  • Practice the presentation (if required to actually make a presentation)

    • learn how to use the technology

    • consider class room layout

    • effective change-overs and teamwork

    • timing
