SYNOPSIS:

United Germany is a major economic, political and cultural force in the world, in particular in the European Union. German is widely used in Central Europe as a means of communication, especially in business and trade, between partners who have no other language in common. German has also contributed key terminology to fields such as music, science and engineering. This course extends the basic communicating skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in German acquired in Introductory German A. It is intended for students with little or no previous learning in German or for students who completed Year 12 German more than 5 years ago. Basic terminology in other disciplines will be introduced as appropriate.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this course students will be able to demonstrate:

  • competence in communicating verbally and in writing for the purposes and in the situations covered. This involves the ability to: a) comprehend spoken and written German (listening and reading), b) interact in a range of everyday communication situations (speaking), c) produce written texts relevant to the areas covered (writing);

  • appropriate socio-cultural skills and knowledge connected with 1;

  • knowledge of and competence in the formal aspects of German studied, eg phonology (system of sounds), morphology (word forms) and syntax (sentence structure);

  • knowledge of aspects of German history and geography studied.

  • familiarity with basic technical terms relevant to their level of study.
