SYNOPSIS:

The ability to work in a high-pressure news environment is crucial to the professional future of broadcast journalism students. Students will build on their broadcast news writing and reporting skills by planning, preparing, producing and presenting weekly television and radio news bulletins in a simulated `real life' newsroom environment. Through seminars and studio workshops, students will learn to plan and produce a news bulletin, work as a member of a news team, make crucial editorial and ethical decisions, and work to strict deadlines.


OBJECTIVES:


On successful completion of this course the student will:

  • be able to research, write and produce television news reports suitable for broadcast;

  • be capable of making editorial decisions in the planning and preparation of broadcast news bulletins;

  • be able to work in a team to produce broadcast news bulletins;

  • be aware of television news production techniques used in the preparation of news reports and news bulletins;

  • be aware of the pressures of working under broadcast news deadlines in a real news environment;

  • be capable of analysing news programs and different approaches to broadcast journalism.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    1. In order to meet course objectives, attendance and participation at tutorials/workshops is strongly recommended.
    2. All items of assessment must be handed in by the due date and time. Late submissions will not be accepted unless accompanied by a valid medical certificate.
    3. Assignments not handed in by the due date and time will result in a grade of zero for that item.
    4. Students must complete and/or submit all items of assessment.
    5. Students must pass all categories of assessment.
    6. The final grade is based on the aggregate of the marks for all assessment items and is assigned in accord with Arts Faculty guidelines.
