RATIONALE:

This course will allow the student to choose a topic from within any science subdiscipline he/she has studied as an undergraduate, and obtain advanced knowledge by private study. The topic chosen should complement the specific research project the student is simultaneously undertaking.



SYNOPSIS:

The subject matter studied by students taking this course will vary, in order to complement the student's Honours or Graduate Diploma Project. The student will be expected to gain knowledge in a selected field by private study in appropriate libraries. Attendance at seminars both within and outside the University will also be expected.



OBJECTIVES:


On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Understand a major area of science at a level beyond that normally covered in undergraduate courses.

  • Complement with advanced background knowledge the Science Project. (Honours: 62403 & 62404; Grad. Dip: 62421 & 62422).

Areas of study will be chosen in consultation with the Examiner and the Project supervisor.     OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Where a student studies material from an undergraduate course, that student will be assessed in the normal manner by the respective examiner for that course. This assessment will be given a weighting equivalent to the credit point value of the undergraduate material.
    2. In accordance with University's Policy on Assignments (Regulation 5.6.1), the Examiner of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
