RATIONALE:

This course exists to satisfy need for flexibility within a programme in order to cater for the widely varying interests and chosen specializations of students.


SYNOPSIS:

This course provides the opportunity for a student to pursue an area of study which will complement the other studies in the programme. Typically the course will consist of specialized investigations extending knowledge and skills in a certain area. The studies could involve, for example, a directed reading course, extension of the project (where appropriate), or some other approved activity which would complement the student's studies in the programme.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Choice of Complementary Study Area The complementary study area chosen will be assigned by consultation with the appropriate Program Coordinator. Where appropriate, students may be directed to a certain complementary study, or in other cases they may be asked to nominate an appropriate study. It is the student's responsibility to find a staff member who is willing to supervise their study.
    2. Attendance Requirements It is the students' responsibility to actively participate in all classes scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
    3. Assessment of the Course This will be carried out in a manner which is suitable to the chosen study. The assessment program will be determined by the Supervisor but will require the Examiner's approval. The Supervisor will advise the student and the Examiner of the assessment programme in writing by the end of week 3 of the semester. This will include: A a description of the work to be undertaken by the student; B the assessment item(s), their weighting and due dates; C requirements to satisfactorily complete each assessment item; D any penalty for assignment submission after due date without an extension approved by the Examiner; E Minimum requirements to pass the course; and F Grading
    4. Assignments The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner. Students must retain a copy of any reports submitted. This must be produced within 5 days if required by the Examiner. In accordance with the University's Policy on Assignments (Regulation 5.6.1), the Examiner of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances. This policy may be found in the USQ Handbook, the Distance Education Study Guide and the Faculty of Sciences' Orientation Handbook for new on-campus students. All students are advised to study and follow the guidelines associated with the policy.
