RATIONALE:

This is the final course of the research component of the Master of Visual Arts in which the candidate is expected to produce studio-based research of a speculative nature. The course culminates in a public exhibition, performance or publication which demonstrates artistic, intellectual and critical rigour of a high standard. Candidates through this research are expected to make a valuable contribution to their chosen field of practice. The work carried out in the dissertation component of the Master of Visual Arts course of study will be concerned with research in an area of relevance to the objectives of the studio practice proposal. Such work may address issues relevant to the contemporary critical debates and practices which inform studio research, or the study of relevant forms of contemporary practice, related traditions and historical precedents, or the study of relevant theoretical issues, and may include visual and other documentation.


SYNOPSIS:

This course provides an opportunity for integration of all aspects of the Master of Visual Arts submission, writing up of the final draft of the written dissertation and exhibition of studio-based research as the final submission for evaluation.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • present studio based research of a speculative nature which demonstrates artistic, intellectual and critical rigour of a high standard in a public exhibition, performance or publication for evaluation;

  • present and submit a written dissertation evaluation concerned with research in an area of relevance to the studio component and thereby create a critical and articulate context within which the studio practice can be evaluated; OR present and submit a dissertation concerned with research in an area of relevance to the objectives of the studio practice proposal for evaluation;

  • integrate all aspects of their dissertation and exhibition submission.
