SYNOPSIS:
United Germany is a major economic, political and cultural force in the world, in particular in the European Union. German is widely used in central Europe as a means of communication, especially in business and trade, between partners who have no other language in common. German has also contributed key terminology to fields such as music, science and engineering. This course further extends the skills acquired in the previous introductory courses and increases students' receptive and productive control over a range of spoken and written text types on topics of cultural, historical, literary and linguistic interest.
OBJECTIVES:
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
demonstrate competence in communicating verbally and in writing for the purposes and in the situations covered. This involves the ability to: (a) comprehend spoken and written German (listening and reading) (b) interact in a range of everyday communication situations (speaking) (c) produce written texts relevant to the areas covered (writing);
demonstrate appropriate socio-cultural skills and knowledge connected with 1;
knowledge of and competence in the formal aspects of German studied, eg. Phonology (system of sounds), morphology (word forms and syntax (sentence structure);

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- All assessment items must be submitted/undertaken in order to be eligible for a passing grade.
- The final grade is based on the aggregate of all assessment items and is assigned as follows: HD = 90-100, A = 80-89, B = 65-79, C = 50-64, F = 0-49
- Penalties for late submission of assignments: 10% per working day of the value of the marks on the particular assignment for up to five working days. Beyond this the assignment will not be accepted.
- In order to achieve course objectives, attendance at and participation in all learning activities is strongly advised. Regular attendance and participation in all learning activities are important factors in the development of aural and oral skills and as such will be monitored regularly and cumulatively .
