RATIONALE:

This course will allow the student to choose a topic from within any science subdiscipline he/she has studied as an undergraduate, and obtain advanced knowledge by private study. The topic chosen should complement the specific research project the student is simultaneously undertaking.


SYNOPSIS:

The subject matter studied by students taking this course will vary, in order to complement the student's Honours or Graduate Diploma Project. The student will be expected to gain knowledge in a selected field by private study in appropriate libraries. Attendance at seminars both within and outside the University will also be expected.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • understand a major area of science at a level beyond that normally covered in undergraduate programs;

  • complement with advanced background knowledge the Science Project (Honours: SCI4401 and SCI4402, Grad. Dip.: BIO5501 and BIO5502) which each student is undertaking.

    1. No detailed teaching contents can be specified for this course. Students will be expected to read broadly and extensively within their chosen area of interest. Areas of study will be chosen in consultation with the Examiner and the Project Supervisor. Where appropriate, students will be permitted to study material from senior undergraduate courses, up to a value of one unit. Assessment for the course will also vary according to the nature of the study undertaken by each student. By the end of the third week of semester, the supervisor will provide the examiner, for approval by the Associate Dean:-

    1.1. an outline of the study

    1.2. the objectives of the study

    1.3. the format, timing and weighting of the assessment items for the study

    1.4. a statement about attendance requirements

    1.5. requirements of students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily

    1.6. penalties for late submission of required work

    1.7. requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course

    1.8. the method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade

Students may be directed to a certain science study, or they may be asked to nominate an appropriate study. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
