ECE 2002 The Developing Child

RATIONALE:

During the years from birth to eight the child's total development is progressing at its fastest rate. At the same time there are significant differences between children in these rates and in the quality of development. Professionals who work with children must be highly competent in recognising developmental changes and must have a repertoire of responses to these changes.

SYNOPSIS:

This course is an in-depth study of the growth and development of children between the ages of birth to eight years. Students will acquire observation/research skills through guided observation activities working with children aged birth to eight years. There will be a strong emphasis on the physical, cognitive and affective (social-emotional) development of young children. IMPORTANT NOTE: Working with Children: State law in Queensland requires that all adults (including university students, pre-service educators, trainers, vocational teachers, industry educators) working with children under the age of 18, in the State of Queensland*, obtain approval before commencing such work. Many education courses include a practical component (professional experience, project work, research, assessment etc.) that may require engagement with children under the age of 18. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess a current suitability card (Blue Card) before commencing any practical components of this course. DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN UNDER 18 UNLESS YOU POSSESS A CURRENT 'BLUE CARD'. OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this course students should be able to:

1. demonstrate knowledge of the major states and features of development in children
2. identify children's development and learning through the application of observation/research techniques
3. apply knowledge gained from observations and research to the study of children.

1. Attendance requirements:
   (a) There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   (a) To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assessment item and must demonstrate their ability to write clearly, grammatically correctly and with accurate spelling and punctuation.
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   If students submit an assignment after the due date without prior approval then a penalty of 10% of the total marks available for the assignment will apply for each working day late.
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   (d) To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must submit all of the summative assessment items and achieve at least 50% of the available weighted marks for those items.
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   (a) The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

   (b) In a Closed Examination, candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments into the examination."

   (a) Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the examination period at the end of the semester of the next offering of this course.
