This course involves a study of the history of the development of both the Australian vocational education and training sector and the university sector, from their beginnings in the nineteenth century to the end of the period of the Keating government in 1995. The course aims to provide students with a sound understanding of why the sectors have developed as they have, with an emphasis on how policies have developed in response to changing circumstances in the social, political and economic climate of Australia over time. Understanding the past provides the basis for a deeper understanding of the current policy climate. The course also provides people working in the VET sector with a greater understanding of how the university sector operates - and why.
In this course students will be encouraged to gain a sound overall understanding of issues and policy directions which have shaped the current development of Australian tertiary education. The course involves a study of key events in the development of tertiary education and an analysis of the current and emerging policies in the higher education and VET sectors. IMPORTANT NOTE: Working with Children: State law in Queensland requires that all adults (including university students, pre-service educators, trainers, vocational teachers, industry educators) working with children under the age of 18, in the state of Queensland*, obtain approval before commencing such work. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess a current suitability card (Blue Card) before commencing any practical components of this course. DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN UNDER 18 UNLESS YOU POSSESS A CURRENT 'BLUE CARD'.
