RATIONALE:

The reduced cost and increasing power of digital and networking technologies have led to an increased use of Internet and web based publishing in education and training. While it is relatively easy to "shovel" existing education materials onto the web, this does not ensure an effective educational use of the web. To effectively use the web requires educators to reconceptualise teaching and learning in the online world and this in turn results in new opportunities and challenges for the student

SYNOPSIS:

This course introduces students to using the WWW, publishing their own content on the World Wide Web and critically examining existing educational applications of the web. Effective use of the web demands that educators reconceptualise teaching and learning in the online world. In addition it requires high levels of interdisciplinary knowledge from such fields as computing, media, communication and psychology. The course examines features and uses of online environments and the current and future impact of these on human activities. While this course will be of most use to educators and trainers, many issues are relevant to people working in communication, information and service provision, entertainment and marketing. Students will be expected to actively use the WWW and the Internet as their primary means of working within the course. In addition to producing traditional academic papers, students will be expected to build significant web environments. NOTES: 1. This course (FET8610) is available through INTERNET DELIVERY ONLY.
