SYNOPSIS:

Online, distance education and open learning are characterised by a combination of factors including separation of teacher and learner; individualisation of the teaching/learning experience; intensive use of educational and communications technologies; and increasing role differentiation and specialisation between staff. While combinationsof these features are present in all education provision, the unique goals and contexts of distance education provision bring new and seemingly complex demands upon the provider organisation. From a management standpoint, the challenges are in identifying ways and means of responding to the new and emerging industry environment. Strategies that will assist the creation of value for the client need to be cultured. This necessitates the contemplation of appropriate management visions that will take the educational organisation forward on the pathway of sustainability. Participation in the global climate demands the rethink of traditional and historic approaches to managing organisations engaged in the distance educational arena. Appropriate management concepts and strategies need to be engineered. These concepts and strategies need to empathies with the organisation's capacity to manoeuvre within the emerging environment. Effective us of technology, systems based approaches, creating competitive advantage, quality and continual improvement are all worthy contemplations. NOTES: 1.
