RATIONALE:

It is part of a nurse's responsibility to ensure that the correct dose of therapeutic agent is given to the correct patient/client at all times. This course will assist the nurse in this task.





SYNOPSIS:

This course is designed to ensure that nursing students understand the basis of how drugs are administered, absorbed, metabolized and excreted. This information is then used so that nursing students become familiar with, and can use, with a high level of accuracy, the mathematical processes involved in medication calculations. The study of these processes will be complemented by drug administration studies in other courses.





OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. describe the routes of drug administration and how the body deals with drugs; and apply mathematical processes to perform medication calculations with a high level of accuracy.

    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily students must obtain 100% for Calculations and at least 50% of the marks available for Concepts.
  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be certain of obtaining a passing grade in this course, students must obtain 100% in the Calculations Test and obtain at least 50% of the marks available in the Concepts Test.
  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
  6. Examination information:
    In a Restricted Examination, candidates are allowed access to specific materials during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination) and calculators which cannot hold textual information (students must indicate on their examination paper the make and model of any calculator(s) they use during the examination).
