RATIONALE:
In order to promote delivery of nursing care in a timely, economic and environmentally safe manner, students need to be prepared for the transition from tertiary education to the work culture.
SYNOPSIS:
This course is practice based and encompasses clinical and management skills fundamental for beginning practitioners and will enhance graduate transition to the workforce.
OBJECTIVES:
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- explore the relationship between work expectations and role conflict;
- explain the significance of work culture and its effect on personnel management at a beginning level;
- explain the impact of collaborative practice on outcomes of care;
- demonstrate ability to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document safe, effective nursing care at beginning practitioner level;
- demonstrate ability to utilise critical reasoning at beginning practitioner level.
- CLINICAL OBJECTIVES 6-15: utilise Irurita's framework when assessing health status of clients as a beginning practitioner;
- apply management theory to prioritising and planning client care at a beginning practitioner level;
- demonstrate ability to interpret events and intervene appropriately as a beginning practitioner;
- demonstrate ability to practice within the legal and ethical boundaries of their qualifications;
- demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with peers and clients in verbal and non-verbal forms;
- demonstrate ability to maintain the safety and dignity of clients at all times;
- demonstrate ability to apply current research findings when planning client care;
- demonstrate accountability for practice;
- interact collaboratively with other members of the health care team when planning care;
- evaluate outcomes of client care at an appropriate level.

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
- Attendance requirements:
It is the students' responsibility to participate actively in all classes scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximize their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students must attend 200 hours of clinical experience. To maximize their chances of satisfying the objectives of the practical component of the course, students should attend and actively participate in 90% of the tutorials and one 2-hour laboratory in the course prior to undertaking their Clinical Experience.
- Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Students must complete 200 hours of clinical experience as partial fulfilment of Queensland Nursing Council requirements for registration. To satisfactorily complete the CLINICAL CHECKLIST students must demonstrate clinical competence in the following areas: (i) completion of four quality audits; (ii) priority planning and care delivery; (iii) drug calculations and, where possible, management of I.V. therapy; and (iv) medications, pain assessment, aseptic technique (simple or complex) thus gaining the 1 mark available for CLINICAL CHEKLIST. To satisfactorily complete the CLINICAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION students must be assessed in Clinical skills and experience as satisfactory on the clinical evaluation form thus gaining the 1 mark available for CLINICAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION. The assessment is based on the ANC Competencies and must be completed at a competent level in a clinical setting. To satisfactorily complete the PEER REVIEW LABORATORY SUPERVISION students must attend a 2 hour NUR2050 laboratory to supervise the clinical performance of a second year nursing student. In order to gain the 1 mark available students must satisfactorily complete the assigned objectives.
- Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without prior approval then a penalty of 10% of the total marks available for the assignment will apply for each working day late.
- Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of a pass in this course students must: (i) obtain 100% in relation to medication calculations (to be completed whilst on clinical); (ii) satisfactorily complete the clinical experience component of the course, indicated by the award of 1 mark for clinical experience; and (iii) satisfactorily complete assessment items as per criteria in the course guide.
- Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks (grades) obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
- Examination information:
There is no examination in this course.
- Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
There will be no Deferred or Supplementary examinations in this course.

The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner. |

Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made. |
