RATIONALE:

This is the first course of the final research component (by part-time mode) of the Master of Visual Arts in which the candidate is expected to produce studio based research of a speculative nature. The course culminates in a work-in-progress exhibition, performance or publication which demonstrates artistic, intellectual and critical rigour of a high standard. Candidates through this research are expected to demonstrate significant progress towards making a valuable contribution to their chosen field of practice. The work carried out in the dissertation component of the Master of Visual Arts course of study will be concerned with research in an area of relevance to the objectives of the studio practice proposal. Such work may address issues relevant to the contemporary critical debates and practices which inform studio research, or the study of relevant forms of contemporary practice, related traditions and historical precedents or the study of relevant theoretical issues and may include visual and other documentation. Presentation of documentation that contributes to the final dissertation will accompany the exhibition component of this course.





SYNOPSIS:

This course provides an opportunity to begin the final integration of all aspects of the Master of Visual Arts submission. The draft of the written dissertation and exhibition of studio-based research will be presented for evaluation as evidence of significant work-in-progress towards the final submission.





OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. present, in draft form, studio based research of a speculative nature which demonstrates artistic, intellectual and critical rigour of a high standard in a public exhibition, performance or publication for evaluation;
  2. present, in draft form, a written dissertation evaluation concerned with research in an area of relevance to the studio component and thereby create a critical and articulate context within which the studio practice can be evaluated; OR present, in draft form, a dissertation concerned with research in an area of relevance to the objectives of the studio practice proposal for evaluation;
  3. integrate, in draft form, all aspects of their dissertation and exhibition submission.

Assessment Description: Submission of a complete dissertation, public exhibition, performance or publication of visual art work due end of second semester. This course will be graded P/F on satisfactory work in progress towards the final submission.


IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as workshops and consultation with supervisors) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assessment item.
  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit Dissertations/Projects after the due date without prior approval or documented medical circumstances, then a fail grade will be given.
  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of a passing grade, students must meet the requirements of designated examiners.
  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The status "RN" is an interim grade until the final grade in the course based on work to be completed in a subsequent course VIS8005 when the RN will convert to the final grade for VIS8005.
  6. Examination information:
    There is no exam for this course.
  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Given the details under (6) above, there are no deferred exams for this course. However, if any deferred/makeup work is granted, it would have to be submitted by a date set by the examiner.
