RATIONALE:

This course has been designed as part of the Tertiary Preparation Program for those students who are interested in literature or who are interested in studying in the Arts faculty of a university. The course operates at a foundation academic level and so students are not expected to have studied literature before. This course aims to introduce students to a variety of literature genres and provide them with practice at writing about literature.

SYNOPSIS:

The search for self and the desire to know a sense of belonging have been recurring themes through many different forms of literature. This course teaches students about four literature genres while providing students with the opportunity to study how writers engage the search for self and/or the need to belong. They are also given the opportunity to explore the writer's purpose and use of characters in each of the set texts.

OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this course, students will demonstrate:

  1. a basic understanding of the literature genres: the play, the short story, the novel and the cultural narrative;
  2. exploration of the theme of belonging/self identity in the set texts and different writers' approaches to this theme;
  3. an awareness of the writer's purpose and use of characters in each of the texts.
