RATIONALE

Preliminary research reports and anecdotal experience suggest that teaching and learning in an online environment differs from teaching and learning in 'traditional' educational environments. Internet technology has created opportunities for interactive and collaborative learning that represents alternatives to traditional, autonomous approaches to learning. Although the 'knowledge base' about teaching and learning online remains relatively meagre, some interesting ideas based on authoritative research and development work are beginning to emerge. The challenge is to focus on extending emerging theories and principles related to key concepts of online pedagogy.

SYNOPSIS

While this course focuses on pedagogical approaches to online learning, the main objective is to connect learners with each other so that together they may explore, investigate, formulate and challenge ideas about online pedagogy in relation to pedagogical frameworks that can be applied to particular educational settings. The design of the course has been strongly influenced by the concept of a "dilemma" leading to "disorientation" and then to learning (Mezirow, 1991). The intention is to present learners with a number of educational "dilemmas" or "triggers" (called "themes") and provide a process for addressing those dilemmas. Learners will engage rigorously with current theories suitable for online learning and teaching in order to make the links between theory and practice. Learners and facilitators will work together to consider, explore, trial, and adapt online pedagogical principles in practice.

OBJECTIVES

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. analyse a selected area of online teaching and learning with a view to developing an understanding of how concepts derived from such an analysis might assist with the implementation of online approaches in a nominated learning context; (Paper)
  2. conduct an analysis of current literature and practice concerned with a selected area of online teaching for the purpose of deriving principles and procedures that might be used to enhance online teaching and learning in a specific context; (assignment 1; Paper)
  3. prepare and present a seminar/workshop online to illustrate to other course participants how principles and practices might be utlisied to enhance online teaching and learning; and (Paper)
  4. through 'reflection-in-action', review the process of analysing, evaluating and developing futher principles of online pedagogy.(reflective diary)
  5. demonstrate competence in written language and scholarly writing including correct spelling, grammar and bibliographic referencing. (all assessment items)
