REQUISITES

RATIONALE

Students entering the nursing profession need to have adequate levels of academic numeracy, including calculations for medication and interpretation and processing of numerical data associated with the health status of their patients. In addition, they need to have adequate skills in the use of computers, including an understanding of how health data is entered and managed, and how computers can be used in diverse ways to support the processes of health care. This course aims to ensure that students have these requisite skills.

SYNOPSIS

This course provides nursing students with a sound understanding of numeracy and its diverse use in the health profession, including the use of numbers for measuring medications and rates of delivery. The students are also expected: to understand the concepts of ratio and proportion and the use of units; to be able to reliably carry out calculations for medical purposes; and to interpret charts and tables. Students will also be expected to understand the basic structure of computers and the internet, to have good word processing skills, including referencing. They will learn basic spreadsheet skills, create and interpret charts and learn how to create flow charts, diagrams and presentations. The course will be closely linked to CMS1008 and other courses in the first year nursing program.

OBJECTIVES

On completion of this course students will be able to:

1. carry out calculations for medical purposes with accuracy and speed, both with a calculator and without one; and reflect on the professional necessity for reliably calculating such quantities; (Assignments 1, 5, 6)
2. perform calculations using rates, ratios, percentages, averages, change and be able to apply these concepts in a nursing context; (Assignments 1, 4, 6)
3. perform calculations using units of measurement and scientific notation as they apply in a nursing context; (Assignments 1, 5, 6)
4. interpret and create charts of medical information; (Assignments 3, 4)
5. use emails, internet search, short cuts, use basic functions of a computer (Assignments 1, 2)
6. create flowcharts and diagrams and effective presentations; (Assignment 5)
7. retrieve and process medical data from computers or networks, for example using databases and spreadsheets; (Assignments 3, 4)
8. have word processing skills suitable for producing high quality assignments and reports. (Assignment 2, 3)

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

1. Attendance requirements:
   It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. To maximise their chances of satisfying the objectives of the practical component of the course, students should attend and actively participate in the laboratory sessions in the course.
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. (Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 10% of the total marks available for the assignment will apply for each working day late.
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must make a reasonable attempt in all of the weighted assessment items, and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Students who do not qualify for a Passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be assigned additional work to demonstrate to the Examiner that they have achieved the required standard. It is expected that such students will have gained at least 45% of the total marks available for all summative assessment items.
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks / grades obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
6. Examination information:
   There is no examination in this course.
7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
   As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations
