RATIONALE

Australia holds a unique position in that we have two distinct Indigenous groups. Australia also has been identified as a multi-cultural society. The health of Indigenous Australians has been documented to be at a significantly lower level compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. There is also supporting literature to demonstrate deficits in the health needs of people residing in Australia from (Non-Anglo-Celtic backgrounds) This course identifies the unique needs of both of these communities and advocates Primary Health Care as the appropriate framework for addressing these communities' needs.





SYNOPSIS

The purpose of this course is to enable students to recognise inequalities in the health status of individuals, families, or groups and to learn about effective strategies for improvements in their health. Particular interest will be given to a) the inequities that remain in Indigenous health status as compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts and b) the skills and knowledge nurses need to work with people from cultures other than their own. In undertaking this course the student will utilise the principles of Primary Health Care to propose strategies in collaboration with these individuals, groups or communities to enable them to have equal access to affordable, equitable and appropriate health service provision to meet their needs. This course explores the effectiveness of cross cultural communication in multi-disciplinary and intersectoral nursing practice which is 'people centred' rather than 'disease centred'.





OBJECTIVES

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. describe the original lifestyle of the first Australians (Indigenous people) and be able to identify the health status of this population over time. (2500 word assignment);
  2. critically analyse historical events and policies that have influenced the health status of Australia's Indigenous population. (2500 word assignment);
  3. identify the principles of primary health care and then apply these principles to propose strategies to create and maintain healthy environments within Aboriginal community controlled health services. (2500 word assignment);
  4. integrate the principles, philosophy and strategies of primary health care that students practice in the workshops and integrate these skills into practice when working with clients from Indigenous and non-Anglo-Celtic Backgrounds in the health care setting. (2500 word assignment & Group cross Cultural communication presentation);
  5. examine the concept of culture and discuss how values and belief constructs of a particular group of people guide their thinking, decision making processes and actions in the health and illness paradigm. (2500 word assignment & Group cross Cultural communication presentation)
  6. discuss the values, prejudices, cultural beliefs, and behaviours of nurses that can affect appropriate delivery of nursing and health care. Students will identify their own potential prejudices, cultural beliefs and behaviours which could affect their nursing practice when caring for a patient/client from a culture other than their own. IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (Workshops and group presentations/discussion groups). They must also study all material provided to them, or required to be accessed by them, to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assessment item. (Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)
  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date then a penalty of 5% of the total marks available for the assignment will apply for each working day late. Extentions for assignments will only be considered under extenuating circumstances.
  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must submit all of the assessment items and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
  6. Examination information:
    Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination), and translation dictionaries. Students whose first language is not English, may take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.
  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    No examinations are scheduled for this course
