Pre-requisite: English Proficiency equivalent to IELTS Band 5.5 plus completion overseas or in Australia of Senior High School or Post-secondary diploma or first year degree or equivalent work experience.RATIONALE
Since 1988 at University of Southern Queensland, the need has been recognised for students from non-English speaking backgrounds to gain skills in English for academic purposes to equip them for undergraduate study with an Australian university. The skills particularly of reading, writing, listening and speaking require specialised attention.
SYNOPSIS
There are three parts to the course; each part is conducted simultaneously. Students develop reading skills by processing a range of texts typical of undergraduate reading styles. They also develop academic expository writing skills. The section on listening and speaking develops skills in participating in tutorial presentations at first year university level.
OBJECTIVES
On successful completion of this course students should be able to perform the following tasks in English:
- read with comprehension and knowledge of the written structure a range of articles and other texts;
- write stylistically appropriate paragraphs, short and extended essays;
- speak English appropriately on a range of issues for university tutorial audiences.

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
- Attendance requirements:
Students are required to attend at least 80% of the scheduled class sessions and ensure their attendance is registered with the staff member in charge of the activity. It is the students' responsibility to access information regarding course-related activities and administration. - Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course. All assignment items must be received prior to the start of the examination period for the semester in which the course is offered. Students may be required to resubmit an assignment that is unsatisfactory. - Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without an approved extension of time then a penalty of 5% of the total marks available for the assignments may apply for each day late. - Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must complete all of the summative assessment items, achieve at least 50% in each examination and at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Students who do not qualify for a Passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be awarded a Supplementary Examination and/or assigned additional work to demonstrate to the Examiner that they have achieved the required standard. It is expected that such students have gained at least 40% of the total weighted marks available for the course. - Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course. - Examination information:
There are three (3) examinations in this course. The Reading and Writing examinations are Closed Examinations. Candidates are allowed to bring only writing instruments into these examinations. The Speaking examination is an Open Examination. Candidates may have access to any material during the examination. - Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held within four weeks following the examination period by arrangement with the examiner. - University Regulations:
