The development of practical musical ability is a fundamental part of any music program; performing ability in both solo and ensemble situations is the individual's most important avenue for musical expression.
SYNOPSIS
The course content will embrace both solo and group performance in the student's area of practical performance and the study of works representative of various stylistic periods in that area of literature of music. Each succeeding course in Performance will require students to demonstrate a greater degree of both conceptual and executant skill development.
OBJECTIVES
On successful completion of this course students will:
- have advanced their standard of performance in their chosen field of practical study (On campus students: Assessment items End-Semester Test; and Ensemble Assessment refer. External Students: Assessment items End-Semester Test; and Mid-Semester Test refer);
- have increased their knowledge of the literature of music by the study of carefully selected works from the repertoire relevant to their chosen field of practical study (On campus students: Assessment items End-Semester Test; and Ensemble Assessment refer. External Students: Assessment items End-Semester Test; and Mid-Semester Test refer));
- have acquired skills in ensemble performance (Assessment item, Ensemble Assessment refers);
- have acquired experience/knowledge in ushering and stage management for concerts. (On campus students only. Assessment item, Concert Support Assessment refers)

| 1. | TECHNICAL EXERCISES AND REPERTOIRE A programme of repertoire materials (including scales, exercises, studies, pieces, etcetera) will be mutually agreed upon by Teacher and Student during the first weeks of the semester. The repertoire will include at least three works of contrasting style (and period where possible) in addition to at least one study. Written copies of this Repertoire List will be retained by the Student, Teacher and Examiner. This Repertoire List will form the basis of both the Student's work for the semester including classes, workshops, concert practice (as applicable) and for the practical tests. In the event of illness or other unforeseen circumstance, this Repertoire List may be adjusted by the Teacher in consultation with the Head of Music. 1.1. PERFORMANCE UNDER PRACTICAL TEST CONDITIONS: On Campus Students: All students are required to present themselves for a formal practical test; This practical test will be held at the end of the semester, during the official University Assessment period and will be 25 to 30 minutes duration. Students must pass this practical test in order to pass the course. The Repertoire List, as agreed between the Student, Teacher and Music Program Coordinator, will form the basis of this practical test. External Students: All students are required to present themselves for periodic formal practical test; The first of these will take place at approximately the middle of the semester; the second of these formal practical tests will be held at the end of the semester, during the official University Assessment period. The mid-semester practical test will be 10 to 15 minutes duration and the end-of-semester practical test will be 25 to 30 minutes duration. Students must pass both of these practical tests in order to pass the course. The Repertoire List, as agreed between the Student, Teacher and Music Program Coordinator, will form the basis of these practical tests. 1.2. | 2. | ENSEMBLE AND GROUP PERFORMANCE Students are required to participate in group musical activities as determined by the Music Program Coordinator. 2.1. CLASS AND TEACHER CRITICISM OF ON CAMPUS STUDENT PERFORMANCE: In addition to the normal weekly classes, students are required to participate in Master Classes as required by the Teacher. 2.2. PERFORMANCE UNDER CONCERT HALL CONDITIONS FOR ON CAMPUS STUDENTS: Students are required to perform at Concert Practice classes, campus Lunchtime Concerts and on other occasions as nominated by the student's principal study teacher. | 40.00 |

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
- Attendance requirements:
There are no attendance requirements for this external course. However, it is the student's responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. - Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To successfully complete an individual assessment item, a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks or a grade of at least C-. This statement must be read in conjunction with Statement 4 below. - Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without extenuating circumstances and without prior approval, then a penalty of a maximum of 5% of the assigned mark may apply for each working day late, up to a maximum of 10 working days, at which time a mark of zero can be recorded for that assignment. - Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade, a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. - Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course. - Examination information:

Given the details under (6) above, there are no deferred exams for this course. However, if any deferred/makeup work is granted, it would have to be submitted by a date set by the examiner. - University Regulations:

ASSESSMENT NOTES
| 9. | (a) The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner. (b) Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be despatched to USQ within 24 hours if requested by the Examiner. (c) In accordance with University's Assignment Extension Policy (Regulation 5.6.1), the examiner of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances such as documented ill-health. (d) In the event that a due date for an assignment falls on a local public holiday in their area, such as a Show holiday, the due date for the assignment will be the next day. Students are to note on the assignment cover the date of the public holiday for the examiner's convenience. (e) Students who do not have regular access to postal services or who are otherwise disadvantaged by these regulations may be given special consideration. They should contact the examiner of the course to negotiate such special arrangements. (f) Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in the course but who have failed to meet some of the specified objectives of the course within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IM (Incomplete-Makeup). An IM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the examiner, a student will be able to achieve the remaining objectives of the course after a period of non-directed personal study. (g) Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or sit for an examination at the scheduled time, may apply to defer an assessment in the course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded: IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination; IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up). |
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Students should be aware that practical tests might be recorded.
- Each student will be required to participate in ensemble activities.
- In a practical course, workload requirements may be greater than those noted due to rehearsal/performance schedules and personal development needs.
- EXTERNAL STUDENTS: Watch your DVD/video cassette assessments before submission to check the recording quality. Ensure that videos are recorded in short play/standard play mode (ie not in long play mode). Ensure videos are rewound before submission.
