RATIONALE

Studio Teaching courses are designed to provide students with practical experience in teaching pupils together with a knowledge and understanding of teaching principles and practices. This course is the second of four that assist students in developing an understanding of, and ability in, music teaching from beginner to advanced level. Specific attention is given in this course to teaching of students up to third grade level.

SYNOPSIS

Students will continue to develop expertise in the areas of teaching repertoire, teaching principles, musical concepts, specific instrumental and vocal techniques and musical literacy. Studies in the psychology of human and musical development will also be commenced. Focus in this course is on the teaching of students up to third grade level. As this course follows from course MUS 2041 students will be required to develop their expertise in each of the designated areas to a more advanced level.

OBJECTIVES

On successful completion of this course students will have achieved:

1. an increased understanding of some teaching methods relating to their voice or instrument;
2. the ability to teach students at elementary level;
3. the ability to perform and discuss teaching implications of repertoire at elementary level;
4. an understanding of aspects of child and musical development.

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

1. Attendance requirements:
   It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Attendance and participation in scheduled Studio Teaching classes/workshops is necessary to meet Objectives 1, 2 and 3 of this course and is therefore a requirement. Failure to attend/participate in at least 80% of these classes will result in a 10% deduction from the final course mark unless there are substantiated reasons for non attendance (eg medical certificate). For this course, normal class attendance consists of one 2 hour lecture and one 1 hour tutorial/observation of lessons per week.
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   To successfully complete an individual assessment item, a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks or a grade of at least C-. This statement must be read in conjunction with Statement 4 below.
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   If students submit assignments after the due date without prior approval, then a penalty of 10% of the total marks available for the assignment will apply for each of the first FIVE working days late, after which a zero mark will be given.
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   To be assured of a passing grade, students must demonstrate, via the summative assessment items, that they have achieved the required minimum standards in relation to the objectives of the course by: (i) students are required to pass the Teaching Demonstration and Folio and Repertoire Performance before an overall pass in the course can be awarded; and (ii) obtaining at least 50% of the total weighted marks for all summative assessment items.
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
6. Examination information:
   There is no exam for this course. There are practical tests.
7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
   Given the details under (6) above, there are no deferred exams for this course. However, if any deferred/makeup work is granted, it would have to be submitted by a date set by the examiner.
