REQUISITES
Pre-requisite: Students must be enrolled in the following Program: BPSHRATIONALE
This program is focused on professional outcomes and it is imperative for students to have a professional grounding interviewing, assessment, counselling skills and a grounding in psychological research skills. This course constitutes the start to professional preparation program.
SYNOPSIS
This course deals with the fundamental issues of research and professional skills. With respect to psychological research skills we want to ensure that students understand the relationship between theory and its operationalisation through the manipulation and measurement of concrete variables and how hypotheses can be constructed from such considerations. In addition students need to develop the skills of data presentation and interpretation of graphical data. With respect to professional skills development, the foundation of all professional practice is the ethical responsibilities of the professional. This course requires students to be aware of and to be able to apply the APS code of ethics to professional issues. Finally, students' introduction to Work Integrated Learning will commence by means of a community based project.
OBJECTIVES
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- demonstrate understanding of the link between theory, variables and hypotheses (Competency Test);
- demonstrate expertise in the use of spreadsheets to manipulate data and to present that data in graphical form (Competency Test);
- explain how data either confirm or do not confirm hypotheses (Competency Test);
- demonstrate the ethical principles that underpin both the Canadian Psychological Association and Australian Psychological Society's code of ethics (Competency Test);
- apply the APS code of ethics with respect to research and professional practice (Competency Test);
- demonstrate their teamwork and knowledge navigation skills via a community based project (Competency Test).
