RATIONALE

This course continues the professional preparation program and focuses on development of the professional and personal skills required to work within a community practice setting.




SYNOPSIS

This course deals with fundamental issues of professional self-management and interpersonal skills within a community based placement. With respect to professional skills development, the course includes attendance at a Work Integrated Learning placement, and is designed to introduce students to the skills required to function effectively in the workplace. With respect to personal skills development, it is envisaged that students will develop their interpersonal skills, social networking skills, and understanding of organisational processes via active community engagement. Projects and other opportunities at each Work Integrated Learning placement are expected to further develop the research and critical thinking skills learned by students in other courses.




OBJECTIVES

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. conduct an experiment they have designed (Research Skills Competency Test);
  2. analyse the results of their experiment (Research Skills Competency Test);
  3. write a results and discussion section of a journal article (Research Skills Competency Test);
  4. display advanced negotiation and facilitation skills within a community setting (Professional Skills Competency Test);
  5. demonstrate an understanding of community processes and their application (Professional Skills Competency Test);
  6. use other professional skills that are appropriate to the placement setting (Professional Skills Competency Test).

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each of the assignments satisfactorily, students must obtain the 1 mark available for the tests.
  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Not applicable.
  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of a passing grade, students must demonstrate, via the summative assessment items, that they have achieved the required minimum standards in relation to the objectives of the course by satisfactorily completing the two Competency Tests. Students who do not qualify for a passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be assigned additional work to demonstrate to the Examiner that they have achieved the required standard.
  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade as in Important Assessment Information 4 will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.
  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

ASSESSMENT NOTES

9.The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.
10.Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within five days if required by the Examiner.
11.Access to email, discussion groups and the internet is a departmental requirement. Students are expected to open their university provided email account and check it regularly for personal communication. Information sent this way will be regarded as being receivable.
