RATIONALE

This course will allow the student to choose a topic approved by the Program Coordinator from within a biomedical science discipline and obtain advanced knowledge by private study. The topic chosen should complement the studies that the student is simultaneously undertaking.

SYNOPSIS

The student will be expected to gain knowledge in a selected field of biomedical science by private study in appropriate libraries and or electronic sources. Attendance at seminars both within and outside the University will also be expected.

OBJECTIVES

On completion of this course students will be able to:

1.
demonstrate an understanding of a major area of biomedical science at an advanced level (Literature Review);
2.
demonstrate a capacity to perform investigative literature searches (Literature Review);
3.
demonstrate an capacity to perform critical analysis of literature searched (Literature Review);
4.
demonstrate a capacity to synthesise and present a substantive report on literature searched in a logical and coherent manner (Literature Review).

IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

  1. Attendance requirements:
    The special study in biomedical science area chosen will be assigned after consultation with the examiner and the Program Coordinator. Students may be directed to a certain Biomedical science study, or they may be asked to nominate an appropriate study. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all relevant activities recommended or scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Students will be advised with a marking scheme and submission requirements.
  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded.
  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    To be advised when the student's Special Study in Science is determined.
  6. Examination information:
    There are no examinations in this course.
  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    As there is no examination for this course there is no deferred/supplementary examination.
  8. University Regulations:
    Students should read USQ Regulations 5.1 Definitions, 5.6. Assessment, and 5.10 Academic Misconduct for further information and to avoid actions which might contravene University Regulations. These regulations can be found at the URL http://www.usq.edu.au/corporateservices/calendar/part5.htm or in the current USQ Handbook.
