The flexibility inherent in enrolment patterns available to students in contemporary programs of pre-service teacher education, and the work, family and other obligations on contemporary pre-service teacher education students, combine to generate a need for a generic "shell" course in which students may enrol in lieu of a compulsory professional experience course not available in the current semester.

In that sense the topics, objectives, reference materials, assessment activities and the requirements to pass the course will differ from student to student, depending on the course that is being replaced.
