RATIONALE

A knowledge and understanding of the development of music can enrich the understanding of artistic expression and contribute to a greater comprehension of society. Specialised knowledge about the music of contemporary and living composers can help break down the artificial divide between the individual and the fine arts.

This course traces the development of western art-music from 1970 to the present day, with particular emphasis on contemporary composers.

On completion of this course students will have demonstrated:

1.
the capacity to understand the development of art-music since 1970;
2.
an analytical understanding of the relationship between recent developments in music composition and contemporaneous developments in other fine art disciplines;
3.
the capacity to understand and compare the philosophical and aesthetic discourse underlying the various genres of composition from 1970 to the present day;
