RATIONALE

Nursing is a practice profession and as such the inclusion of a sequence of professional skill experience is fundamental to ensure safe practice not only as a beginning practitioner, but also as a student, during actual clinical courses. This course, consistent with the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing, enables the student to blend the knowledge of natural and behavioural sciences, together with critical thinking and professional nursing skills. This blending is accomplished with the underpinning belief that students must be able to practice in an environment which is safe for them, and which is also safe for their future clients of care, both as students and as beginning practitioners as Registered Nurses.



SYNOPSIS

This course applies the concepts of personal and client vulnerability and safety, from a bio-psycho-social perspective. It promotes a holistic approach to client assessment and management as students extend their prior learning by utilising simulated learning situations coupled with their clinical experiences. This will facilitate the development of students' personal and therapeutic communication skills with the aim of producing learners who are able to demonstrate critical thinking, reflection and safe transfer of theory from the simulated situations to the real world of practice and to their subsequent courses of study. A two (2) week clinical practicum experience is incorporated in this course to enable students to apply their learning to the 'real world of nursing practice.'



OBJECTIVES

On completion of this course students will be able to:

1.
perform accurate nursing assessments of clients or simulated clients experiencing problems relating to altered homeostasis both in simulated situations and in clinical practice(Laboratory Attendance and Participation Assessment, Laboratory Assessments, Clinical Practicum, Psychomotor Skills Assessment, Clinical Reflections and Activities Assessments, End of Semester Examination).
2.
identify the appropriate theory, the principles for nursing practice and the evidence for practice which support the implementation of psychomotor nursing skills. (Laboratory Attendance and Participation Assessment, Laboratory Assessments, Clinical Practicum, Psychomotor Skills Assessment, Clinical Reflections and Activities Assessment, End of Semester Examination).
3.
transfer interpersonal and psychomotor skills learned in simulated clinical laboratory sessions to provide appropriate and effective safe client care as determined by Tollefson criteria for Clinical Laboratory Assessment and the ANMC competencies on the clinical practicum evaluation tool. IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

  1. Attendance requirements:
    In order to maximise their chances of satisfying the clinical objectives of this course, students must attend and actively participate in all laboratory sessions and clinical practice scheduled for the course. Students must complete 80 hours of clinical experience in order to satisfy the requirements of the Queensland Nursing Council. In order to ensure the achievement of clinical objectives, it is the students' responsibility to attend 100% of the clinical placement period (80 hours) and participate appropriately in all activities (such as, in-service sessions and practical, research work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete Laboratory Assessments and Clinical Practicum students must fulfil the 100% attendance and participation and obligations of the Laboratory Attendance and Participation Assessment. To satisfactorily complete the Clinical Practicum students must attend 100% of the 80 hours of clinical practice and demonstrate each of the competencies on the Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool to a satisfactory level (S on the tool) to obtain the mark of (1) available for this item. To satisfactorily complete the Psychomotor Skill Assessment, students must demonstrate these skills to a Satisfactory standing as per the Tollefson book, thus earning the mark of (1) for this item. To satisfactorily complete the end of semester examination students must achieve at least 50% of the combined weighted marks available for Part A and Part B of this exam. To satisfactorily complete the Clinical Reflections and Activities Assessment and Laboratory Assessments, students must achieve at least 50% of the total marks for each of these items.(Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)
  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date without prior approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment will be deducted for each working day late.
  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of a passing grade, students must be assessed at a satisfactory level (the mark of 1) on the Laboratory Attendance and Participatiion Assessment, Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool, the Psychomotor Skill Assessment and obtain at least 50% of the weighted marks available for this course in each of the following: the End of Semester Examination; the Clinical Reflections and Activities Assessment;and the Laboratory Assessment.
  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
  6. Examination information:
    There will be a 2 hour examination for this course. Exams for this course are restricted: Canditates are allowed access only to specific materials during a restricted examination. The only material that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); calculators which cannot hold textual information or be programmed (students must indicate on their examiniation paper the make and model of any calculator(s) they use during the examination). Students whose first language is not English, may take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidates's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

ASSESSMENT NOTES

1. There is a two hour examination in this course. Students may have access to a non-programable calculator and if English is a second language may take an appropriate non-electronic translation dictionary (not a technical dictionary) in the examination.
2. Any Deferred or Supplementary tests for this course will be held in week two of the following semester.
3. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.
4. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date if requested by the Examiner.
5. The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
6. The Faculty will normally only accept assessments that have been written, typed or printed on paper-based media.
7. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.
8. Students need to be conversant with and will require access to e-mail and internet access to USQ Connect for this course.
9. Students who do not have regular mail services or who are otherwise disadvantaged by these regulations will be given special consideration. They should contact the examiner of the course as soon as possible to make arrangements for this.
10. In the event that an assignment is due on a public holiday in their local area such as a show day, the due date will be the next day. Students must note on the assignment cover the date of the show day for the examiner's convenience.
11. Students who for medical, family, personal or employer related reasons are unable to complete an assignment or sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply through the Faculty Assessment Section. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded; IDS (incomplete deferred examination), IDM Incomplete deferred makeup), IDB (Incomplete both deferred examination and make-up work).
12. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.

Students of clinical courses need to be certain they have submitted the following documents to the Faculty Office to ensure they will be allowed to proceed to a clinical placement - Current CPR Certification Completion of the Queensland Health Orientation Deed Polls, submission of the Hepatitis B titre declaration and titre results and Suitability for Working with Children Card (Blue Card).
