STAFFING

RATIONALE

All students entering tertiary study require an opportunity to master and hence be confident with basic mathematics embedded within their discipline studies. This course will provide students with the basic mathematical knowledge and skills for tertiary studies in undergraduate courses that do not specifically recommend mathematics, for example Bachelor of Arts. This course also provides foundation material in mathematics for further studies in the pre-tertiary studies in mathematics.

SYNOPSIS

Using concepts of self-paced instruction and adult learning the course guides students through a carefully sequenced series of topics which will provide the foundation for mathematics that will be encountered in tertiary studies and further pre-tertiary studies in mathematics. The self-paced structure allows students to work at their own pace within a specified framework developing confidence with mathematics, mathematical communication and general problem solving.

OBJECTIVES

In the process of successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

1.

demonstrate an understanding of a number of mathematical topics essential for tertiary study and further pre-tertiary study, detailed below (all assignments);

2.

interpret and solve a range of problems involving mathematical concepts relevant to this course (all assignments);

3.

demonstrate the skills necessary to extend mathematical knowledge into everyday life and other studies (all assignments);

4.

demonstrate an understanding of personal strategies used in the study of mathematics (all assignments);

5.

effectively interpret and communicate mathematics within a range of situations and problems (all assignments).

1. Attendance requirements:
   There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   N/A
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   Students are strongly encouraged to discuss any problems, regarding their ability to submit assignments on time, with the lecturer prior to the due date of the assignments. If students submit assignments after the scheduled due date without prior approval of an extension of the due date, then a penalty of 5% of the total marks available for the assignment may apply for each working day late.
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade, students must gain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Students who do not qualify for a Passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be assigned additional work to demonstrate to the Examiner that they have achieved the required standard.
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
6. Examination information:
