Rationale
Students entering tertiary study require an opportunity to master and hence be confident with basic mathematics. This course will provide students with the basic mathematical competencies for tertiary studies in Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration).
Synopsis
Using concepts of self-paced instruction the course guides students through a carefully sequenced series of topics which will provide the foundation for mathematics that will be encountered in tertiary studies detailed above. The self-paced structure allows students to work at their own pace developing confidence with mathematics and general problem solving.
Objectives
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of a number of mathematical topics essential for tertiary study, detailed below (all assessment items);
- interpret and solve a range of problems involving mathematical concepts relevant to this course (all assessment items);
- demonstrate the skills necessary to extend mathematical knowledge into everyday life and other studies (all assessment items);
- demonstrate an understanding of personal strategies used in the study of mathematics (all assessment items);
- effectively communicate solutions to a range of problems (all assessment items).

Important assessment information

Attendance requirements:
One 1.5 hour group learning session will be provided in each teaching week of the semester. Students? attendance at these sessions, and participation in the sessions, will not be used in determining any student?s final grade in the course. However, students are strongly advised that their active participation in all of the group learning sessions, will greatly increase the probability that they will achieve a passing grade for the course. In addition to the scheduled group learning sessions, individual tutorial sessions can be booked by students throughout the teaching weeks. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Students are not required to complete every assessment item to a satisfactory standard in order to obtain a passing grade for the course. -
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without prior approval then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late. -
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of a passing grade, a student must achieve an aggregrated mark of a least 50% in the total marks allocated for the course and achieve a mark of at least 40% in the final exam. Students who do not qualify for a Passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be awarded a Supplementary Examination and/or assigned additional work to demonstrate to the Examiner that they have achieved the required standard. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course. -
Examination information:
Examinations in this course are restricted examinations. In a Restricted Examination, candidates are allowed access to specific materials during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials; calculator; 1 A4 page of hand written or typed notes (written on both sides); English translation dictionaries (but not technical dictionaries). -
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the next examination period. -
