There is a need for introductory studies to prepare students for the demands of both higher education and the professional workplace. Competent numeracy, literacy and e-literacy skills are all required, as is an ability to effectively manage the complex life/work balance. Consequently, students entering higher education require an opportunity to practise, refine, and master essential mathematical skills as prerequisites for successful study and subsequent professional workplace tasks and responsibilities. This course will provide students with basic mathematical competencies for higher education studies and professional workplaces. Central to this course is the concept that students should be able to take control and manage their own learning associated with mathematical skills and knowledge, and develop problem solving strategies that will enable them to adjust to the rapidity of change within the 21st century as it applies to university study and the professional workplace.


Using concepts of self-paced instruction the course will guide students through a carefully sequenced series of topics which will provide the foundation for the mathematics that will be encountered in higher education studies. It will provide essential basic competency in the mathematics used in modern professional workplaces. This course allows students to develop confidence with mathematics and general problem solving and study skills. Embedded within the course content will be the theme of student self-regulation of studying and learning. This will incorporate ideas, concepts and theories including academic self-efficacy, reflective practice and resilience.


On completion of this course students will have:

  1. demonstrated an understanding of a number of mathematical topics essential for tertiary study detailed below
  2. demonstrated the skills necessary to extend mathematical knowledge beyond everyday life and into further studies
  3. demonstrated the skills necessary to interpret and solve a range of problems involving mathematical concepts
  4. demonstrated the skills necessary to communicate effectively solutions to a range of problems

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    It is the studentsí responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade, students must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Restricted Examination. In a Restricted Examination, candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials; calculators (including graphics calculators);1 A4 page of hand written or typed notes (written on both sides).

    Students whose first language is not English may take an appropriate unmarked nonelectric translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the examination period at the end of the semester of the next offering of this course.

Assessment notes

  1. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Course Examiner.

  2. Students will require access to email and have internet access to UConnect for this course. See the ICT standards at

  3. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within five days if required by the Course Team Leader.

  4. In accordance with University's Assignment Extension Policy (Regulation 5.6.1), the Course Team Leader of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

  5. Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply in writing to the Course Team Leader to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades maybe awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination); IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete Both Deferred Examination and Make-up); or RN (Result not Known).
