Other requisites

Pre-requisite: English Proficiency equivalent to IELTS Band 5.5 plus completion overseas or in Australia of Senior High School or Post-secondary diploma or first year degree or equivalent work experience.

Rationale

A need has been recognised for students from non-English speaking backgrounds to gain skills in English for academic purposes and develop strategies to equip them for undergraduate study prior to entering an Australian university. The skills particularly of reading, writing, listening and speaking require specialised attention as well as strategies to facilitate the acquisition of those skills.

Synopsis

There are three parts to the course; each part is conducted simultaneously. Students develop reading skills by processing a range of texts typical of undergraduate reading styles. They also develop academic expository writing skills. The section on listening and speaking develops skills in participating in tutorial presentations at first year university level.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Read with comprehension and have knowledge of the written structure and range of articles and other texts; (Reading Assessment Items 1, 2& Final Test)
  2. Write stylistically appropriate paragraphs and analyse the structure of written text ; (writing Assessment Items 1, 2 & Final Test)
  3. Speak, listen and respond in English appropriately on a range of issues for university tutorial audiences; prepare, organise and present a tutorial; present a short, formal and correctly structured talk to an audience (Speaking/Listening Assessment Items 1, 2 & Final Test)

5. Speaking and Listening Modules 1-3:
1. Preparing and managing a tutorial focused on a current social issue to facilitate listening to audio material and generate group discussion about current social issues. Delivering verbal summaries of topics discussed in the group to a larger audience.
2. Using spoken language and non-verbal communication to make a short, clearly structured presentation about a social or environmental issue, using power point.
3.Taking notes and answering comprehension questions from listening activities. Developing strategies to assist listening in an academic context.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    1. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lecturers, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course, and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. All assignment items must be received prior to the start of the examination period for the semester in which the course is offered. Students may be required to resubmit an assignment that is unsatisfactory.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date without an approved extension of time then a penalty of 5% of the total marks available for the assignments may apply for each working day late.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must complete all of the summative assessment items, achieve at least 50% in each examination and at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Students who do not qualify for a Passing grade may, at the discretion of the Examiner, be awarded a Supplementary Examination. It is expected that such students have gained at least 40% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the mark obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There are two (2) examinations in this course. The Reading and Writing examination is a Closed Examination. Candidates are allowed to bring only writing instruments into this examination. The Speaking examination is an Open Examination. Candidates may have access to any material during the examination.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any deferred or supplementary examinations for this course will be held within four weeks following the examination period by arrangement with the examiner.

Assessment notes

  1. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within 24 hours if required by the Examiner. In accordance with the University's Assignment Extension Policy (Regulation 5.6.1), the examiner of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
