Adolescence is an exciting time in life, but it has its challenges for both adolescents and their teachers. An insight into these challenges and how they might impact on behaviour is important for teachers working with and supporting teenagers. Teachers are in an excellent position to really get to know adolescents, to understand their problems and concerns, and to provide support as they move through school and transition to the workplace and to the broader community. This understanding will also greatly enhance teachers' capacity to deliver a more relevant and productive school experience.
This course has as its major focus an explication some of the major developmental, social and emotional challenges facing adolescents in school today. It builds on knowledge gained in EDC1100 Lifespan Development & Learning, EDC2100 Managing Supportive Learning Environments, and EDC2400 Diversity & Pedagogy. Key challenges are identified and discussed along with their implications for student behaviour and student welfare in the school environment. The role of the classroom teacher in working with, relating to and supporting adolescents is a particular focus of the course.
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On completion of this course students will be able to:
- identify the major socio-cultural, behavioural and emotional challenges associated with youth in an Australian context (Assignment, Exam)
- describe how these challenges can influence behaviour and learning in the school context (Assignment)
- define the teacher's role in supporting adolescents through the difficult challenges of adolescence (Assignment)
- demonstrate familiarity with a range of school and community based support personnel, services and programs for students with behavioural and social-emotional adjustment difficulties (Assignment)
- demonstrate an indepth knowledge and understanding of one key challenge of adolescence (Assignment)
- demonstrate competence in written language and scholarly writing including correct spelling, grammar, and bibliographic referencing (All assessment items)
- demonstrate, where appropriate, ways in which ICT's could be used to assist students with behavioural and social-emotional adjustment difficulties (All assessment items)
- demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing (All assessments)

Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
Closed Examination: Candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments into the Closed examination.
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the examination period at the end of the semester of the next offering of this course.
