Rationale

This course aims to prepare registered nurses to demonstrate advanced nursing practice competence within the legal and professional context of emergency care of rural and remote populations.

Synopsis

This course specifically focuses on emergency nursing care of adults and children in rural and/or remote contexts. Within this context, advanced nursing skills are essential to ensure optimum outcomes for the client. These skills ensure that timely, appropriate assessment, intervention and referral for continuity of care occur in the absence of support services. This course is designed to embed advanced nursing practice skills and graduate skills to promote critical thinking and decision making for autonomous and accountable practice, within specified legal parameters. Students are required to complete two (2 ) weeks of clinical experience organised as two placements of one (1) weeks duration if they are not currently working in a rural or remote nursing setting or emergency care area. Students who are currently employed in an emergency care area but not in a rural or remote setting will be required to undertake at least one (1) week of clinical placement outside of their current practice setting. Students who currently work in a rural and remote emergency care area will be required to undertake one week of clinical experience. All students while on clinical will be required to undertake and be assessed in the skills of Advanced Life Support, Cannulation and Suturing.

Important assessment information

1. Attendance requirements:
   There are no on campus attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the student's responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximize their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students must complete up to 80 hours of supervised clinical experience dependant on context and current clinical experience. Students are required to complete two (2) weeks of clinical experience organised as two placements of one (1) weeks duration if they are not currently working in a rural or remote nursing setting or emergency care area. Students who are currently employed in an emergency care area but not in a rural or remote setting will be required to undertake at least one (1) week of clinical placement outside of their current practice setting. Students who currently work in a rural and remote emergency care area will be required to undertake one week of clinical experience. During these clinical placements, students will have to demonstrate mastery of the ANF Advanced Nurse competencies noted in the clinical assessment tool including Advanced Life Support, Cannulation and Suturing Skills to obtain a passing grade in this course. Mastery will be assessed by the student's preceptor who will use the forms developed by USQ for this specific purpose. These forms will contain a list of the ANF competencies and the preceptor will be asked to sign off on each element of each competency as the student demonstrates competency. Failure to demonstrate clinical competency will result in a fail grade in this course.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   To complete the Case Study and the On-line test satisfactorily students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each item. To complete the clinical experience satisfactorily, students must demonstrate that they have completed the required hours and achieved the ANF competency standards and clinical assessments in Advanced Life Support, Cannulation and Suturing. To complete the Pre-Clinical Reflections, Clinical Experience Performance Evaluation and Advanced Emergency Skills satisfactorily students must obtain a mark of one (1) for each item.
   
   
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   If students submit assignments after the due date without prior approval then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment will apply for each working day late.
   
   
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   To be assured of a pass in this course students must submit each assessment item, achieve an aggregate of 50% of the marks available for the summative assessments (Case Study, On-line Test and Post Reflection) and satisfactorily complete (mark of 1) Pre-Clinical Reflections, Clinical Experience Performance Evaluation and Advanced Emergency Skills.
   
   
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
   
   
6. Examination information:
   There is an end of semester online test which is accessed through the Studydesk. Students will be notified of the on line test availability via the ANP5003 StudyDesk site.
   
   
7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
   There will be no Supplementary examinations in this course. Deferred examinations will be at the discretion of the Examiner in extenuating circumstances.

Assessment notes

1. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must submit the assignment by EASE (or if electronic submission is not possible despatch the assignment to the USQ). The onus is on the student to provide proof of the submission (or despatch) date, if requested by the Examiner.
   
   
2. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be dispatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.
   
   
3. The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
   
   
4. Students who do not have regular access to postal services or who are otherwise disadvantaged by these regulations may be given special considerations. They should contact the examiner of the course to negotiate such special arrangements.
   
   
5. Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in a course but who have failed to meet some of the specified objectives of a course within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IDM (Incomplete Deferred Makeup). An IDM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the Examiner, a student will be able to achieve the remaining objectives of the course after a period of non directed personal study.
   
   
6. Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded: IDS (Incomplete- Deferred Examination); IDM (Incomplete Deferred Makeup); IDB (Incomplete- Both deferred Examination and Deferred Makeup).

Evaluation and benchmarking

Student evaluations will be compiled to evaluate the student experience, relevance of the course content and the effectiveness of course delivery. Clinical milieu data will be extrapolated to maintain Clinical contractual arrangements with appropriate and supportive clinical agencies.
